Is it normal for a box turtle to sleep outside its shell?

My turtle has been sprawling out of his shell in a death position lately. I'm kinda scared. Especially since I accidentally forgot I let him out for 24 hours and found him wedged between two counters. I quickly got him warm though and fed. Yeah, is it normal?
