Dead Space 2: how did Isaac end up on the Sprawl?

Ok, I haven't played Dead Space 1 but all I know is that Isaac was once on the Ishimura 3 years ago before he ended up on The Sprawl. My question is what happened during those 3 years and how did he end up on The Sprawl.
