How can I delete files that could be recovered?

I deleted a few files from my business PC, but saw that you can still read the name/recover the files with certain software. The names of these files are passcodes, or logons. I need to delete this before I can sell it. What are these ghost files called, and does anyone know any freeware to delete them?
