Why does almost everyone in Brazil live in high rise apartment blocks?

Brazil is huge with lots of cheap open land so why do they choose to live in these tightly packed lego block buildings that make their cities an eye sore. Commie blocks I think is what they're called, worse than suburban sprawl.
